What Are the Benefits of Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays?
Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is a practice rich in spiritual and personal benefits, deeply rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He said, as reported in Sahih Muslim, “The actions are presented on Mondays and Thursdays, so I love that my actions be presented while I am fasting.” These days are special in Islam because deeds are believed to be taken up to the heavens. By fasting, Muslims seek the pleasure of Allah, hoping that their actions are presented in the best state. Fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it’s a form of self-purification, allowing Muslims to cleanse their souls, increase piety, and gain closeness to the Creator. Physically, it helps to detoxify the body and instill discipline in daily life. It also encourages empathy for the less fortunate by experiencing hunger, driving charitable behaviors. Fasting on these days every week acts as a regular spiritual check-up, maintaining a steadfast connection with faith and a consistent practice of self-restraint.
